Mr. Jim Schuster
High School Band and Orchestra Director

Born in Berrien Springs, MI. Jim Schuster attended Marine City High School where his natural interest in music was piqued. After graduation, Schuster went on to earn a BA in instrumental music at MSU with a minor in music theory.
Brought into the music program at MSU by Kenneth Bloomquist, Schuster has studied under John Whitwell, John T. Madden, and Janine Gaboury-Sly. Gaboury-Sly, an outstanding musician who has played with both the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, taught Schuster the complexities of the French Horn, his primary instrument.
While at MSU, Schuster joined the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity in 1992, a premier musically focused fraternity, and remains a member today. Schuster played with the Spartan Brass, the Orchestra, and the Wind Ensemble for three years, the Symphonic band for two years, the Pit Orchestra for two years, and the Marching Band for five years during his stay at MSU.
Schuster is capable of playing many instruments although the french horn, the mellophone, the baritone, and the trumpet are the four with which he is most proficient.
Graduation from MSU saw Schuster become a substitute teacher. He taught at East China High School, Algonac, and Port Huron before settling in at Redford High School as a full time instructor for a two year tenure . The Davison school system was succesful in hiring Schuster away in the summer of 1999.
In his spare time, Schuster likes to shoot both pool and darts and play basketball or football. He also enjoys learning to arrange music and playing with the Blue Water Brass Quintet based in Port Huron. Schuster also attends performances of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as well as the more contemporary artists, such as Tori Amos, as time permits.
A memorable moment for Schuster was during a concert performance in 1999 at Toledo where he held celebrity Debbie Reynolds' hand as part of a group of sixty who sang to her that night.
Future plans for Schuster include earning a masters' degree from Vandercook college and building the Davison High School instrumental music program. Schuster is both young and aggressive with the will to accomplish his goals.
